FIRST Robotics
Team 108 in Atlanta,GA 2007
The SigmaC@T Robotics Club in which I participate competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition where a new robotic project is specified every year. Using a kit of parts and under an allocated time frame, we have to design and build the robot to perform specific tasks. We are sponsored by Motorola, which provides us with a certain level of financial support and resources. We build the robot using their facilities, and when needed, their engineers provide us with mentoring support.
The competitions allow me to travel and visit other places, as well as interact with teams from other states and from other countries. I also enjoy the camaraderie among the teams. Each team always helps each other, even though we will eventually be competing against one another. In addition to participating in the competition I have been able to volunteer as a translator for Portuguese-speaking teams, a referee, and a field re-setter.
Mentoring Hallandale Elementary's "RoboColts"
Programming Subteam
The Robotics Club also gave me an opportunity to help the community. For the past two years I have been mentoring the RoboColts, the Hallandale Elementary School robotics team, coached by Mrs. Mary Delborrello. The team is composed of kids in 3rd-5th grade who have a similar project task of building a robot. I teach programming and mechanical concepts and help them apply these techniques towards their robot. It is a very gratifying experience introducing children to robotics because I know many of them will grow up appreciating technology the same way I do.
